Abstract

Introduction : Interprofessional collaboration in healthcare and its impact on provision of health services are well described in the literature. However, health educators’ views about interprofessional collaboration are less known. This qualitative study explored academics’ perceptions regarding interprofessional collaboration, interactions between professionals, as well as potential facilitators and barriers for interprofessional collaboration. Methods : Twenty-eight educators from four Swiss universities participated. Data were collected in six focus groups and two individual, semi-structured, interviews. They were transcribed ad verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results : Three themes (based on categories) emerged from the data: definition of interprofessional collaboration, individual facilitators (values and attitudes, resources and personal factors) and contextual facilitators (institutional support to develop IPC and workplace organisation). Conclusion : Educators highlighted the importance of individual and contextual factors for successful interprofessional collaboration. Refining the characteristics of interprofessional collaboration as well as reflecting about “empirical practices” is an important step in the process of conceptualisation. Level of evidence : 3.
