This article explores the vulnerable ties between children from poor families placed under the care of social services and their parents, looking at their interactions as part of a programme involving social service-supported holidays. It is based on the findings of an ongoing study on the contribution of children and teenagers (C&Ts) in defining the relevant aspects of child poverty based on a participatory study methodology in social work, inspired by the capability approach developed by Amartya Sen (1999 and 2009). Through this methodology, which is called Ma Voix en images (My Voice in pictures) and which values and promotes the voice of C&Ts and their parents in building knowledge about the theme studied, this contribution suggests rethinking the nexus between poverty and the placing of minors under care. The goal is not only to understand what minors are deprived of but also to identify ‘solutions’ (conversion factors) to the difficulties they experience and the freedoms that must be strengthened (capabilities) by discussing research findings with the various players involved in the fight against poverty and in child protection.
