Lorsqu’un patient présente un comportement problématique au sein d’une unité psychiatrique, se pose la question de son (ir)responsabilité. Une telle question n’est pas anodine puisqu’une attribution de responsabilité à l’individu pourra mener à son exclusion alors qu’une attribution à sa maladie le destituera de son statut de sujet. De nombreux facteurs viennent moduler ces attributions de responsabilité, qui se font le plus souvent non pas sur un mode binaire (responsable/irresponsable) mais de manière conjonctive, nuancée et temporaire. Ce sont toutes les variations autour de l’attribution de responsabilité que se propose d’explorer cet article, sur la base d’une observation participante de deux ans dans une unité de réhabilitation.
When a patient displays a problematic behaviour in a psychiatric unit, we tend to question his (ir)responsibility. The answer to this question is crucial, since an assignment of responsibility to the person might lead to his exclusion, whereas an assignment to his mental illness might deprive him from his status as a subject. Many factors act as a modulation of the assignments of responsibility. These assignments are not binary (responsible/irresponsible), but rather conjunctive, nuanced and temporary. All these variations around the responsibility will be the main focus of the present article, written on the basis of a two-year participant observation in a rehabilitation psychiatric unit.
Cuando un paciente presenta un comportamiento problemático en una unidad psiquiátrica, nace la pregunta de su (ir)responsabilidad. Tal interrogación no es anodina, puesto que una atribución de responsabilidad a la persona puede llevar a su exclusión, mientras una atribución a su enfermedad mental lo destituye de su estatus de sujeto. Varios factores modulan las atribuciones de responsabilidad, que en general, no se hacen de manera binaria (responsable/irresponsable), sino de manera conjuntiva, matizada y temporal.
