Introduction : Following an injury and a subsequent rest period, an athlete first returns to participation (rehabil-itation and alternative training) before being able to return to sport and then to competition. The athlete’s physician, physiotherapist and coach are the main stakeholders. In order to follow the athlete during these phases, training load (volume × intensity) can be monitored. The aim of this study was to present an amateur athlete’s journey before and after a hamstring injury through training load monitoring and an interview. Method : In order to monitor training load, duration in min¬utes (volume) and perceived effort (intensity) were recorded after each session from the week before the injury until 2 months after the injury. In order to better understand and describe the experience of the athlete, a semi-structured interview was conducted at the end of load monitoring. Results : Results highlighted a significant delay between injury and return to participation, a lack of physical prep-aration upon return to sport and a lack of interprofessional communication among the main stakeholders. Discussion/conclusion : This study highlights the im¬portance of 1) early active management following muscle injury, 2) optimized physical preparation in the return-to-par¬ticipation phase and 3) interprofessional communication among stakeholders. Training load monitoring of the injured athlete could be a relevant tool to optimize these different aspects.
